Boeing on 15th of July 1916, as “Pacific Aero Products Co.” and was re-named the “Boeing Airplane Company” on the 9th of May 1917. Today Boeing has become the Worlds largest manufacturer of airliners with only Airbus as significant or major competitor. Boeing 747-200 series entering service in 1971 and had more powerful engines giving higher takeoff weights than the original 100 series, this allowed it carry more fuel and therefore fly further. It is of note that EP-IBU an Iran Air Airbus A300B2, was controversially shot down in error on the 3rd July 1988 over the Persian Gulf by the USS Vincennes (CG-49), a Ticonderoga class cruiser armed with a Aegis Combat System, the resulting in 290 civilian deaths.
