A subsidiary of the AMR Corporation, American Airlines was formed by as American Airways in 1930 by combining 82 small airlines, in 1934 American Airways was acquired by E.L. Cordit and re-named "American Airlines".

In April 2001 American Airlines acquired Trans World Airlines (TWA) and is now the largest "passengers-miles" airline in the world. American Airlines has it's headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas, and currently operates a massive 600+ mixed fleet of Airbus, Boeing and McDonnell Douglas airliners.
